Orpha Durgin celebrates 33 years of experience as an educator

ARLINGTON, VA, May 10, 2011 /Publishing and Books PR News/ -- Orpha A. Durgin, Teacher at Yorktown High School, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in secondary education.

With 33 years of professional experience as an educator, Ms. Durgin attributes her success to her perseverance. At Yorktown High School, she teaches English, and United States and Virginia government classes. She also serves on the social-emotional focus committee and publishes the ROCS newsletter to the school's staff. Being an educator has always been a dream of Ms. Durgin. As a child, she would teach her dolls in an imaginary school.

In 1975, she graduated from James Madison University with a bachelor's degree in education. Shortly after beginning her teaching career at Yorktown High School in Harrisonburg, Va., Ms. Durgin was nominated and received the Teacher of the Year award. She was honored the following year with another Teacher of the Year award; this time she was recognized on a regional level, which included the areas of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Additionally, she founded an alternative school program and instituted a service and reward system within it in 1987. From 1994 to 1999, she was evening principal at Osbourne High School in Prince William County, Va. Ms. Durgin intends to continue being an educator at Yorktown High School, which is listed by Newsweek as one of the top high schools in the country.
