New Moon Girl Media, Inc. talks Suicide-Prevention to Parents and Tweens

Girls ages 10-14 have the fastest-growing suicide rate of any population group. New Moon Girls, the ground-breaking magazine and website for girls 8 and up, brings suicide prevention into sharp focus with tween readers for Suicide-Prevention Month.

DULUTH, MN, September 17, 2009 /Publishing and Books PR News/ -- Suicide is an uncommon topic in tween media, but one that New Moon Girl Media feels is important and appropriate for the age group. "People who think kids aren't at risk for depression, self-harm, and suicide because of their young age have a false sense of security," says Nancy Gruver, Founder and CEO of New Moon. September is Suicide Prevention Month and New Moon Girls, the ground-breaking magazine and online community for girls ages 8 and up, brings suicide prevention into sharp focus online this week.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, girls ages 10 to 14 have the fastest growing suicide rate of any population group, with the rate increasing 75.9% between 2003 and 2004 (the most recent data available). The CDC's figures do not surprise adult moderators at New Moon. "Our website receives hundreds of posts from girls every day, and each is read by an adult before it's published," says Autumn Libal, Product Development Director. "We know suicide is something girls in this age group hear about, worry about, and, tragically, even sometimes consider. We see that in their conversations online." The girl and adult editors who create New Moon Girls together are bringing awareness of the risk and of effective prevention strategies to tweens and parents with special features like, "Talking About Suicide," by Harriet Mosatche, Ph.D. and "How to Cope After Losing a Loved One to Suicide," by Shari Scott, Ph.D. Information for parents is at Daughters.com, New Moon's companion website featuring experts on raising girls.

New Moon has never shied away from tough topics with its members or their parents. Since the girl-edited magazine began publication in 1993, girls have felt the safety and trust to talk candidly about, and share solutions to, topics like depression, eating disorders, bullying, developing sexuality, and even human trafficking. In 2008, New Moon Girls launched its creative online community which includes girl-to-girl advice, member profile pages, instant messaging, and other features connecting its members worldwide with each other. The website, averaging 4900 visits daily, has seen an explosion of girls sharing experiences with their peers.

What happens when a girl brings up suicide on the website? "At this age, girls talk about suicide in poems, stories, and advice questions. Mostly it's imaginative self-expression, but sometimes it will be a serious warning sign, and we can't know which is which," Libal explains. "Any time a girl mentions suicide, we contact her parent, sharing what was said and providing information on how to find suicide prevention resources."
