John McCallum Honored for Accomplishments in Journalism

John McCallum began his journalism career as a staff reporter

    CHENEY, WA, July 11, 2009 /Publishing and Books PR News/ -- John McCallum, Editor at the Cheney Free Press, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of newspaper publishing.

With nine years of experience in his field, Mr. McCallum has cultivated expert skills in news sports, photojournalism and paper layout design. As an Editor at the Cheney Free Press, he is responsible for overseeing the circulation of 3,200 copies and readership of approximately 9,000, managing three reporters and their assignments and beats, covering sports and East Washington University news, and facilitating the editorial board. Previously, he worked in sales, construction and project management before returning to college to pursue his degree in journalism. He attributes his success to hard work and his ability to take an interest and ownership in his reporting.

A graduate of Eastern Washington University, Mr. McCallum received his Bachelor of Science in Journalism with a concentration in Public Relations from Eastern Washington University and his Bachelor of Arts in Radio and Television. He is a member of the Spokane Regional MarCom Association. Among the awards he has won from the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association for his journalistic achievements are the First Place Award for Best Investigative Reporting (2003), First Place Award for Best Scenic Photography Color (2005), Second Place Award for Best Sports Reporting (2004) and Third Place for Best Health/Medical Reporting (2001), all in Groups I & II Newspapers.


First Place Award for Investigative Journalism (2004), the First Place Award for Photography, the Second Place Award for Best Sports Story and the Third Place Award for Best Education Story. Mr. McCallum hopes to eventually move into public relations or work for a larger news organization.
